New York, NY - Congressman Charles Rangel released the following statement in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on January 13, 2012:
“On Monday our nation celebrates the historic birthday of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Half a century ago, the great Dr. King changed the course of America's history by devoting his life to a struggle for ‘the riches of freedom and the security of justice.’
In 1963, I marched 54 miles from Selma to Montgomery with Dr. King. There were times I wanted to give up and questioned what we were trying to accomplish. However I never questioned the passion and leadership of the man we were following. Dr. King’s selflessness and sincerity for justice made him an impossible force to stop. Thanks to Dr. King’s vision during the many challenges throughout the Civil Rights Movement we were able to pass the monumental Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act.
Throughout this weekend, we pay tribute to Dr. King’s legacy and accomplishments by observing a national day of service. There are many great events and volunteer opportunities within our City in which I encourage you to participate. Let us give thanks for our freedoms and Dr. King’s service by getting involved and working together for a better future. As always, I will continue to work for you in Washington to protect the lesser among us so we may unite to advance Dr. King's vision."
