Hundreds Attend Rangel's Social Security Info Fair In The Bronx

Mar 28, 2013 Issues: Economy, Social Security and Medicare

New York, NY – Over  two hundred constituents filled the Faculty Dining Room of Lehman College in the Bronx on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, to attend the Social Security Information Fair hosted by Congressman Charles B. Rangel.  Along with guest speaker Bea Disman, the New York Regional Commissioner of the Social Security Administration, Rangel answered questions from seniors regarding their social security benefits.

“I am very pleased to see so many of my constituents, including my new constituents from the 13th congressional district," said Rangel. "Social Security is a bedrock program for everyone in America who earned it with a lifetime of hard work. There are false rumors circulating about the future of Social Security, and I'm glad for this opportunity to provide accurate information and address your concerns and questions regarding Social Security."

Though the event was on all aspects of Social Security, it highlighted the new online services that are now available to help speed up response time by the Social Security Administration. Facing budget cuts that have shortened office hours and reduced staff, Commissioner Disman encouraged attendees to take advantage of the new services available through the internet.

Following the remarks by Rangel and Disman, and the ensuing Question and Answer session, representatives from the Social Security Administration were available to meet in private with constituents and assist them with their individual Social Security concerns.

"Thank you to everyone who attended this event today. I hope we were able to answer questions regarding your hard-earned Social Security benefits," said Rangel. "Republicans have constantly threatened to harm the Social Security program that helps support millions of Americans and many of my constituents. I will continue to fight in Congress to protect your rights to claim what you deserve."

Rangel is hosting a series of events around the District, including the Business and Innovation Conference on Thursday, April 4, 2013, from 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  This event will take place at the Lovinger Theatre in the Music Building at Lehman College (250 Bedford Park Blvd West, Bronx, NY 10468).  It will feature presentations by the Acting Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Dr. Rebecca Blank and the National Director of the Minority Business Development Agency, David Hinson who will provide info on a wide range of topics and answer individual questions.
