Rangel: December Jobs Report Shows Need For Bipartisan Efforts
Washington, D.C. - Congressman Charles B. Rangel released the following statement after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 155,000 jobs and the unemployment rate remained at 7.8 percent in December:
“With 34 consecutive months of private sector job growth, our economy continues to move in the right direction. To keep making progress we must work in a bipartisan fashion and put American people ahead of politics.
The deal that averted the fiscal cliff showed that when we work together, we can solve the important problems that we face. The political brinksmanship displayed in the last Congress must not continue as it only undermines consumer confidence, jeopardizes job growth, weakens our economy, and threatens the security of the middle class.
As the 113th Congress begins, we are presented with an opportunity for a fresh start. However, the upcoming debates over the debt ceiling, sequester spending, and the federal government running out of funding present fresh challenges for us. Our constituents are relying on Democrats and Republicans to work together to find common sense solutions that will put America back to work and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to pursue the American Dream if they play by the rules and work hard. This should not be a partisan issue and we must not use these upcoming debates for political gain.”
